First Things First: Training An Older Puppy to Walk on a Leash

We adopted our 8 month old (almost 9 months) Rough Collie on June 4th and she is a beautiful girl. (That’s not her above!)

But she was raised in a barn, with 19 other Collies.  She shared a 5′ x 5′ kennel with her brother and was only let out twice a day to run in the yard, do her business and interact with the other dogs.

And that means that until we showed up, she’d never been on a leash nor worn a collar.  So the combination of the two has been overwhelming for her.  But until her recall is perfect, that’s the way it will have to be!

So we are slowing getting her used to being on leash and she seems to be getting the hang of it!

We go out in the yard 3-4 times a day, with her on-leash and our Sheltie running free (he’s a strange little dog but his recall is great!).  She doesn’t much like it when she gets to the end of the retractable leash, usually if I’m picking up after her and don’t remember to walk fast or jog!  But she’s getting there.

I looked for a few tutorials to help me along with this journey, and these are the best I’ve found!
