Why do you need to organize your home? Do you need your items to have a home so you can easily find them? Do you have kids and need a streamlined morning routine to get everyone ready for their day? Do you struggle to get out the door on time in the morning?
Each one of us will have a different motivation for organizing our homes. But the universal rules of SHOO apply. Let’s review the S – sort.
First things first, we have to sort. We sort the things we need into broad categories. When I did my linen closet, I sorted items into the following:
- Cleaning Products
- Electrical cords
- Pet supplies
I needed my linen closet to let me put my hands on cleaning supplies easily, so I reorganized the shelves and put the cleaning products from and centre. This way I can see what I have and I can find them easily.
Start small. Choose a single drawer in your kitchen and decide how you need this drawer to function for you and your family. Once you’ve gained confidence in organizing the drawer, work your way up to closets and bathrooms.
What you’ll ultimately find once you start organizing, is how great the benefits are:
-It will reduce your stress
-It will give you more space by keeping clutter out for the long haul
-It will simplify the way you live by creating useful systems that work for you and your family
When you finally start to make the changes needed to organize your space, the benefits will all add up to give you more room to breath so you can enjoy your family and friends more.
